What are Plantain Chips?
As the name suggests, plantain chips are simply chips made from plantains. They are similar to bananas but have a lot of differences, too. For starters, plantains are larger and longer than a banana. They are technically a fruit, but like tomatoes, they are eaten and cooked like vegetables. Unlike bananas, you cannot eat raw plantains and must cook them before eating. However, they are versatile, and you can cook them no matter how ripe (green, yellow, or black). There are many ways to eat plantains, and they can be in appetizers, desserts, or even snacks like these sweet and salty plantain chips.
How to Make These Sweet and Salty Plantain Chips
This recipe is straightforward and will take less than 30 minutes to make. You won’t need any special equipment, but a mandolin with an adjustable blade might be helpful. You’ll need to peel your plantain and cut it into 1/8″ slices. Next, get a large bowl, place all the ingredients inside and toss the plantain slices until all the pieces are well coated. Then, fit a cookie sheet with a rack, and using tongs, place the plantain slices in a single later on the rack. Once on the rack, place them in an oven preheated to 375º F. Bake them for 20 minutes (until crispy and somewhat brown). Finally, once they are cool enough to pick up, sprinkle with a bit of extra vanilla sugar and salt and enjoy your sweet and salty plantain chips!
