How to Make Red White and Blue Star-Shaped Sugar Cookies
The recipe itself is just like any sugar cookie recipe. You’ll start with creaming the butter and sugar. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend them until a dough forms. The challenge with this one is getting the red, white, and blue patterns on the cookies. Start by making your dough. When it’s all completed, separate it into 3 equal parts. Then, dye one part red, one part blue, and leave the last part white. Knead the food coloring into the dough, and let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour.
After the dough has sat in the fridge, take it out, and break off small sphere-shaped chunks, about 2-3 inches in size, from each color of dough. Then place them together on a rolling surface, alternating red, white, and blue pieces. Roll the dough out until it is about 1/2″ thick, and use a star-shaped cookie cutter to make 12-14 cookies.

Ingredients
1 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup butter (1 stick)
1 Egg
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
2 Cups gluten-free flour
1 Teaspoon baking powder
1 Teaspoon salt
1/4 Teaspoon red gel food coloring
1/4 Teaspoon blue gel food coloring
Instructions
In a large bowl, use a mixer to cream together the sugar and butter. Add the egg, and the vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly.
Add the gluten-free flour, baking powder, and salt until a cookie dough begins to form.
Divide the dough into 3 equal parts. Color one part blue, one part red, and leave the third one white. Knead each one to make sure the coloring is evenly distributed.
Cover each cookie dough color in plastic wrap, and place it in the fridge for at least an hour. Remove the dough and let sit for 5 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside
Break the cookie dough colors into several small spheres, about 2-3 inches in size.
Sprinkle your rolling surface with flour and place the different colored dough spheres together, alternating colors.
Sprinkle your rolling pin with flour. Roll out the cookie dough until it’s about 1/2″ thick. Cut 12-14 star-shaped cookies and place them about an inch apart on the cookie sheet.
*Note: To re-roll the dough, be sure to piece the cut of dough together (rather than re-shaping it into a ball and re-rolling). This will keep all the colors intact rather than blending them.
Bake cookies for 6-7 minutes. Carefully remove them from the cookie sheet and place them on a wire rack to cool.
